Lou Ottens, the Dutch engineer who invented both the portable cassette tape and the CD, has died aged 94. The engineer died in his hometown of Duizel. Dutch newspaper NRC Handelsblad first reported.

An estimated 100 billion cassette tapes have been sold around the world since they were introduced in the 1960s according to BBC.

He became head of Philips’ product development department in 1960, where he and his team developed the cassette tape. His invention transformed the way people listened to music, and there has even been a resurgence of the cassette in recent years.

While sales of cassette tapes waned and nearly went extinct in the era of compact discs and MP3 and digital technology, the format has enjoyed a renaissance in recent years.

However, Ottens called the cassette resurgence nonsense, adding that nothing could match the compact disc’s sound.
